In contrast to the same period of the previous year, Legrand was able to increase its sales in the first quarter

In contrast to the same period of the previous year, Legrand was able to increase its sales in the first quarter of 2019 by 7.3% from 1,445.2 m EUR to 1,550 m EUR.

EBITDA increased by 9.2% from 324.6 m EUR to 354.4 m EUR and net income by 8.6% from 175.3 m EUR to 190.4 m EUR.

The distribution of sales was as follows: 42.1% was made in Europe, 36.6% in Central and North America, and 21.3% in the rest of the world.

Europe continued to grow (+ 2.3%) led by Italy, followed by Germany, Greece, Portugal and the UK. Sales declined in France, Spain and the Netherlands. In Europe's new markets, sales increased by 5.7%, with Russia, Turkey, Hungary and the Czech Republic standing out above all.

The operating result amounted to 1,139.0 m EUR; here an increase of 11.1%. Net profit increased by 8.5% to 771.7 m EUR; so an overall very good financial year for Legrand.

In France, sales increased by 1.1% in 2018 compared to the previous year, in Italy it was 6.2%, with particularly strong rises in Eastern-/ Southern Europe, Germany and the Netherlands. In North and Central America, the plus was 4.2% and in the Rest of the World 4.9%.

For 2030, Legrand has set themselves extraordinary goals: They would like to achieve 80% of Group sales with sustainable products, increase the proportion of women in management to 1/3 and reduce CO² emissions by 30%. An ambitious goal - good luck.

over the previous year. The operating result increased by 10% and the net profit even by 21.1% to EUR 574.5 m.


Compared to the same period of the previous year, sales in France only rose by 0.1%, in Italy 5.7% and in the rest of Europe 10.4%.

Sales in North and Central America increased by 4.1% and in the rest of the world by 4.7%.

So a very good result that was essentially influenced by two factors. Legrand has been successful with new product launches in various countries, and through takeovers since the beginning of the year, it has further consolidated its position in the world markets. Lumileds is one of the world's leading manufacturers in the lighting sector and becomes the exclusive supplier to Legrand in the Americas in the LED sector.

In December 2016, Philips, the former parent company, sold 80.1% of its Lumileds light business to the investment company Apollo, following the concerns of CFIUS (Committee on Foreign Investments in the US) and the sale of the LED division to the Chinese consortium Go Scale Capital has been canceled.

in the offices of  the manufacturers Legrand and Schneider Electric and  the wholesalers Rexel and Sonepar on the 6. September on suspicions  received by the Competition Authority and the Anti-corruption-agency in April.

The charge is price fixing between manufacturers and wholesalers, money laundering, tax evasion, bribery of representatives and public officials, abuse of corporate assets.

Other sources even say that there are reports of a secret agreement between the four companies limiting competition through price-fixing.

Should there be a guilty verdict; the companies would face a fine of hundreds of millions of euros.

Since the beginning of the year Legrand has made 4 smaller acquisitions. One in China (Shenzhen Clever Electronic), France (Debflex), Dubai (Gemnet), and a joint venture with Modulan (Germany).

In the first half of the year, 2,986.8 m EUR were up by 11.8% compared to 2017. The operating result amounted to 589.4 m EUR and grew by 13.3%.

In France (16% of Group sales), sales increased by 2%; In Italy (10% of Group sales) sales rose by 6.3%, in the rest of Europe the increase was 11.3%.

Turnover in France totalled EUR 457.4 m (-2.0%), in Italy EUR 270.7 m (+6.0%), in the rest of Europe EUR 426.7 m (+3.4%), in North and Central America it was EUR 647.2 m (+11.4%) and in the rest of the world EUR 619.4 m (-7.8%).

Since the beginning of the year Legrand has managed to conclude 7 acquisitions with a total additional annual turnover of almost EUR 160 m; for the year as a whole the target here is an additional 4% of total turnover.

Legrand is already strongly represented in the States in the lighting sector through its subsidiaries Pass & Seymour and WattStopper and is now further strengthening its position by means of this latest takeover and addition.

Pinnacle Architectural Lighting has approx. 230 employees and at present makes an annual turnover of approx. USD 105 m (EUR 93 m), 95% of which is generated in the United States.
