Sonepar has entered into a partnership with Sunlight Financial in the US. Sunlight is working with solar companies and homeowners to help finance solar and home improvement projects. Sunlight provides loans through a simple approval process and without prepayment fees to improve the cash flow situation for solar installers.

The installers registered with this program can order Sunlight financed systems and products from Sonepar, i. e. Sunlight pays Sonepar directly for this, thus improving the situation with the installers.

Sonepar increased its sales by 4.1% to a new high of

Sonepar increased its sales by 4.1% to a new high of 22.4 bn EUR from 21.6 bn EUR in 2017.

Europe accounts for € 11.2 bn EUR (50.2%), America 9.6 bn EUR (42.7%) and Asia / Pacific 1.6 bn EUR (7.1%).

The number 1 in Europe is Germany with 2,826 m EUR, followed by France with 2,335 m EUR, and the Netherlands with 1539 m EUR and Italy with 1,116 m EUR.

In America, it was the United States with 7,382 m EUR, followed by Canada with 1,099 and Mexico with 505 m EUR.  

In the Asian-Pacific region, the number 1 was Australia with 591 m EUR, followed by China (mainland) with 387 m EUR.

54% is done with contractors, 28% with industrial customers. In automation and infrastructure it is 34%, in cables and wires 16% and the lighting sector is 15%.

Sonepar wants to become the world's leading, most advanced electrical wholesaler, with a totally new organization;

Sonepar wants to become the world's leading, most advanced electrical wholesaler, with a totally new organization; also in terms of marketing, digitization and new country responsibilities. This new organization came into force on 23.4.2019.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) remains Philippe Delpech, based in Paris.

Jérôme Malassigne was hired from 20.5.2019 onwards as Chief Strategic Marketing and Sourcing Officer and Head of the Asia-Pacific region. He will be stationed in Geneva, where he will lead and coordinate the various activities.

Jo Verbeek, head of Sonepar Asia Pacific, will report to J.Malassigne.

Dave Gabriel, Sonepar's Chief Operating Officer (COO), will be retiring on 15.5.2019 and heading back to the US.

His successor as President Sonepar North America (Canada, Mexico, US) will become Rob Taylor.

Stefan Stegemann becomes President of Sonepar Central and Northern Europe (responsible for Austria, the Baltics, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Luxemburg, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Switzerland).

Patrick Salvadori will become president of Sonepar Western Europe and South America (responsible for Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom and South America.) P. Salvadori will be based in Paris, at the company's headquarters.

Benoit Pedoussaut remains president of Sonepar France.

Andros Neocleous becomes Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Sara Biraschi Rolland becomes Chief Human Resources Officer.

Olivier Catherine becomes General Counsel.

Jérémie Profeta is responsible for digitization (Chief Digital Enterprise Officer)

Matt Pothecary is Vice President of Communications and Sustainability.

In our research "Who are the market leaders in wholesaling in Europe" for our new European survey, we have now reached Spain:

Spain excels in the electrical wholesaling by the fact that there are a large number of purchasing -/ marketing associations, of course the international organizations such as Fegime, Gewa, Idee and Imelco, have their partners in Spain.

The market leader is Sonepar Ibérica with 8 companies and round about 130 branches, the largest of which is Guerin, followed by Dielectro and Hispanofil. (Sonepar’s turnover is approx. EUR 430 m).

Number 2 is Imelco with its 2 strong organizations, Electroclub and Grudilec; together about 60 companies and over 300 branches.

Right behind is FEGIME España with its heavyweights like Berdin and Coeva or Electrofil. Also, the Bongrup now belongs to Fegime (Bongrup was founded in 2006, which is less active in the electrical sector, but rather in the sanitary area).

For completeness only: Gewa is involved with the Nou Grup and Idee with the Elektra group

ABM Rexel was renamed in Rexel Spain S.L. in February 2019. Its 47 branches and 4 logistics centers in Barcelona, ​​Granada, Madrid and Renteria generate sales of around EUR 185 m.

Sonepar took over the Italian wholesale group Elettroveneta from Padua at the beginning of March.

Rumors of a change in the Italian electrical wholesale market have been around for some time, but seeing that Sonepar has taken over Elettroveneta, this was quite surprising.

Elettroveneta is it’s headquarter in Padua with a further 34 branches and has been a member of the Findea marketing organization, which in turn is a member of the international association IDEE.

Until the takeover by Sonepar, Elettroveneta has formed a market community called Sistema E with Ferri Elettroforniture from Pescara and their 11 agencies.
The takeover must still be approved by the respective antitrust authorities.

Rexel continues its name change strategy in Spain as well; since 4th February ABM Rexel is now Rexel Spain S.L. (as in Germany/Hagemeyer  now Rexel, see our News of November 30, 2018).

Rumors in the market, that Rexel would give up in Spain are decidedly opposed. On the contrary, Rexel affirms its interest in the Spanish market and wants to expand its position also through acquisitions in the future. By the year 2020, Rexel wants to be one of the market leaders.

(Note from EMR: market leader in Spain is the Sonepar group with 8 companies and 130 branches, turnover of around 430 m EUR; but also the marketing organizations Electroclub / Imelco and Fegime are very strongly represented).

Rexel employs approx. 500 people in 47 branches and 4 logistics centers in Barcelona, Granada, Madrid and Renteria. The turnover in 2018 was 185 m EUR.

in the offices of  the manufacturers Legrand and Schneider Electric and  the wholesalers Rexel and Sonepar on the 6. September on suspicions  received by the Competition Authority and the Anti-corruption-agency in April.

The charge is price fixing between manufacturers and wholesalers, money laundering, tax evasion, bribery of representatives and public officials, abuse of corporate assets.

Other sources even say that there are reports of a secret agreement between the four companies limiting competition through price-fixing.

Should there be a guilty verdict; the companies would face a fine of hundreds of millions of euros.

Sonepar has appointed Jérémie Profeta as chief digital enterprise officer. He will report to Philippe Delpech, Sonepar’s CEO,

and will be a member of the Sonepar Executive Group.

He becomes head of information technology, logistics, e-commerce, data analytics and more and will structure and accelerate Sonepar’s transformation into a digital enterprise organization.

Olivier Catherine has been appointed General Counsel of the Sonepar Group. He will begin his new office on May 2, 2018.

Mr. Catherine comes from the business law firm Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, before which he held various responsible positions with Bureau Veritas.

He will be a member of the Sonepar Executive Group (SEG) and reports to CEO Philippe Delpech, who came to Sonepar on September 4, 2017 from the elevator company Otis.

In the countries where Sonepar operates, laws and regulations are becoming ever more complex, requiring someone to ensure that they are respected and enforced in this challenging business environment.
